A Guide to Constructive Feedback
Posted by James Cullen on
Making music is, by its very nature, something that doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Even the most isolated of bedroom producers will still receive feedback on their music, whether they seek it out or not. If you’re lucky enough to have a group of friends who also produce music, or a similar peer group, the resource there of people able and willing to give feedback is an invaluable one. Feedback is so important when you’re making music because when it comes from a source that you trust, it can help you apply thought processes and ideas to your production that...
Music Production Mindset Tips
Posted by James Cullen on
I’ve been thinking a lot recently about how important your attitude towards your music is. I see post after post on Reddit and other social media in which producers are asking for advice on things like constantly swinging between loving and hating their music, how to break out of the trap of trying to emulate other artists, how to grow their confidence in recording themselves singing. These are just a few examples, in fact I’d say at least half of the posts I see are people asking questions that don’t directly pertain to music production, but lean more towards being...
Lockdown Tips: How to Keep Your Momentum

If you’re living in the UK, you’ll be absolutely ecstatic that we are in another lockdown due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. If you’re elsewhere in the world, circumstances may be different for you, but it’s fair to say that the pandemic has thrown everyone’s world into disarray, and this is likely to have implications in every aspect of your life. Perhaps you can’t get access to your usual resources, maybe you go to a studio, or in your University’s facilities, and they aren’t available. Or maybe your mental health...
Simplicity vs Complexity

When you’re producing music, especially in the early stages of a track, it can often be a daunting and difficult process to sort out your ideas. If your process is anything like mine, you will throw loads of ideas down into your DAW as quickly as possible. I always find that I will make a 8 bar loop of a really complex arrangement, putting down any idea I think works and sounds good. This is by no means a bad thing, because complexity has its place in electronic music, but it’s knowing the difference between complexity for complexity’s sake and...
Tips for Finishing
Posted by James Cullen on
I’ve been including in a lot of my recent articles tips about throwing as many ideas onto your DAW as possible. It’s a great way of creating music; sticking as many cool ideas as you can get down and then see where you go from there. Beginning a track is obviously a massively important part of your process, but so is finishing one! This has really got me thinking about the opposite end of the spectrum. Finishing tracks can be daunting, challenging and frustrating. Sometimes you can get stuck with how to progress your ideas once you reach a certain...
