Inside The Project John Summit & Lavinia – Shadows Ableton Remake

1) Chords: A#m → G# → D#m → F#add9 → G# turnaround

This John Summit “Shadows” Ableton remake uses a moody minor chord progression in A# minor, moving through A#m, G#, D#m and F#. The chords are spread across several octaves, creating a wide, atmospheric melodic house sound. At the end of the phrase, a short G# major chord acts as a turnaround, creating tension before the loop returns back to A#m.

2) Bass 

John Summit here, uses a deep Reese bass in the breakdown made with the included Serum 2 “bass break” preset. The bass follows the root notes A# → G# → D# → F# → G#, matching the chord progression shown in the screenshot. The rhythm is kept simple with a steady 1/4-note groove and a very small sidechain compression to the kick. 

In the drop, the bass notes stay almost the same, but the low end and mid bass is intensified with a few additional layers and heavy Kickstart sidechain, creating a fuller and more powerful drop. Presets of those basses are included in the project. 

3) Melody / Lead

The melody uses a high brass-style lead sound, with the MIDI notes shown in the screenshot below. In our opinion, the melody is not the main focus of the track, as John Summit & Lavinia – Shadows is very vocal-heavy. This lead appears only in the second part of the drop / chorus, while the vocal is still playing. It works as an additional layer rather than the main hook, but we still included it to show the accuracy and detail of the recreated project.

4) Drums

The drum pattern follows a classic house-style groove, built with kick, claps, snaps, cymbals, shakers, and crash layers. The shakers add movement and energy, while the kick keeps the rhythm steady and club-focused. In the preview below, you can listen to how the drum sounds work separately inside the remake.
