1) Drums

The drums follow a classic four-on-the-floor groove, providing a steady foundation for the shifted, constantly moving instrumental layers. Drum Fills, Low Tom, Drum Low, Crash, Snare Shot and other percussion accents add further detail to the already dense groove, while a heavily panned Tambourine creates additional movement across the high frequencies.

2) Instruments

The melody is built from three Serum 2 presets — Lead, Lead 2 and Lead 3 — all using a single saw wave with no additional plugins or layers. Each part varies slightly in its notes and accents, complementing the others across different sections while automation adds further movement and development. A Pluck preset accents each offbeat, adding a more danceable feel and highlighting the open hi-hat, while the Guitar Open layer, created with an Ableton guitar sample, adds a quirky rhythmic character that works perfectly with the melody and bass.

3) Bass

The harmonic foundation follows the Em → D → G progression, while the 14-beat melodic phrase instead of a standard 16 creates tension and a sense of incompleteness, forming a repeating seven-bar cycle. The main bass uses a Bass preset in Serum 2, with Macro automation opening the filter before the drop. A Bass Guitar preset adds a more acoustic character and a slightly different pattern, working with the main bass to create the overall groove.

4) Full Project

This arrangement is a great example of how to work with polyrhythms and create quirky, unique compositions. Built almost entirely with MIDI instruments, the project is also easy to adapt and reshape for your own production.
